An usher is a person who shoulders the prime responsibility of seating the guests, collecting the offering and serving the communion. Apart from this, there are a few other obligations that an usher has to meet. He/she has to greet people entering the service, keep orders in the sanctuary, and also report or contact people needed in situation of emergency.

Who can be the Usher?
An usher can be anyone starting from the youngest member in the wedding ceremony. He can be a friend or relative of either the groom or the bride. It is not that ushers need to be experienced in their duties, since their job on the wedding day requires extra care and attention.

Useful tips for the ushers
Ushers play an important role for a Christian wedding. Not necessarily, there has to be only one usher at the wedding. There can be as many ushers depending upon the number of guests. It is the main responsibility of the ushers to welcome guests and also seat them at the right place without any fuss. If the number of guests is less than sixty then two ushers are enough. But as the guest number increases, the number of ushers should also be multiplied to take minute care of every detail need of the guests attending the ceremony. Though, traditionally ushers are elected from the groom side of the family, but the practice has witnessed a change, having ushers from both side of the groom and the bride.

Hence, an Usher has to remain very much aware of the wedding, the number of the people included in the guests list and who are guests. You should also be well aware of the wedding venue and how everything is arranged so that you can take good care of everything as and when required. As an usher, you should arrive well in advance of the start of the ceremony. The typical seating rule is that the family and friend of the bride are seated on the left side of the aisle and the groom’s family and friends of the right side. You should be on alert, so that when guests start to show up you should be ready to welcome them, making them feel comfortable and easy.

When the ceremony gets going, you should seat at the backside of the church so that if any guest arrive late, then you can welcome that person and accompany him/her to the respected seat. However, Ushers should take care of how well they dress up themselves. You should maintain the same style as the groom and the Best Man.
